The Grand Livadia Palace (aka "The Big" or "The Great" Livadia Palace)

The Livadia Palace and Park ensemble consists of the Grand Livadia Palace, the retinue's quarters, and the Palace of the Minister of Court Count Frederiks.

The Grand Livadia Palace was designed in Italian Neo-Renaissance style with elements of Western Gotic, Arab East and Byzantine architecture by architect N.Krasnov (1864 - 1939). It was erected as summer residence for the Russian Tsar Nicholas II.

The Grand Livadia Palace is located on the site of the older palace. It took seventeen months to build this new one (from April 23, 1910 till September 14, 1911). Most advanced technologies of that time were used building the Palace.

Besides white Inkerman stone, the designer used the Crimean diorite, marble limestone, the Italian marble, hammered metals, Urals jasper, glass and precious woods.

The main entrance was designed in the form of the protruded portico decorated with the Carrar marble.

The architecture of two patios, Arabian and Italian, is original. The Italian patio is of particular interest - nice columns, fretted marble fountain, gates that are the work of the art.

Also of interest is the Palace Church. It was built in Georgian-Byzantine churches style by the architect I.Monigetti.

A significant historic event of the Second World War period is connected with the Palace. The Crimean (Yalta) Conference of the Heads of the three allied powers of the anti-Hitler coalition, the USSR, the USA and Great Britain was held in the palace from February 4 till February 11, 1945.

The delegations of the allied states which took part in the Conference stayed in three palaces of the Southern Crimea. The US delegation stayed in the Livadia Palace, while British delegation was in Alupka (Vorontsov's) Palace and USSR delegation was in Koreis Palace.

In February 1945 the Front (Main) Entrance Hall was the place where paricipants of the Crimean Conference gathered together before the opening of plenary meetings in the White Hall.

During the period of the Crimean Conference, The Billiard Room served as a dining room for F.Roosevelt. On the last day of the Conference, on February 11, 1945, historical documents were signed in this room by W.Churchill, F.Roosevelt and I.Stalin. The exposition in this room shows a picture taken in the center of the Italian patio on February 9, 1945.

The Tsar Grand Reception Study during the Crimean Conference served as the bedroom of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, where the President of the USA worked and relaxed.

The Waiting Room during the Crimean Conference was reception room of the US President Franklin Roosevelt. Two meetings (on February 4 and 8) were held here between F.Roosevelt and I.Stalin, the head of the USSR delegation. During the second meeting the leaders discussed the problem of the USSR becoming involed into the war against Japan.

Today The Grand Livadia Palace houses a museum, but sometimes it is used by the Ukrainian authorities for international summits.
